Weekend getaways… Worth it?
Spoiler alert: yes.
Weekend getaways have some benefits and some drawbacks. We’ll start with the hard part:
- Let’s face it, weekend getaways can be expensive
- It can be tough to find the time
- If you have kids, childcare can pose a problem
Now that’s out of the way, here’s why they’re worth it:
- We’ve already talked about how marriage is your most important relationship. A weekend away together gives you the time and space to check in on your relationship and spark a fresh connection over shared experiences.
- You’ll benefit before you even leave. Studies show that anticipation and planning lead to joy. Plan your getaway together to jumpstart the connection.
- There are lots of little ways you can bring the memories and experiences home with you. Here is a quick guide to help you bring intentionality while away and stay connected when you’re back home.
As of writing this, our last getaway was a little too long ago. We snuck away for 4 beautiful days in Norway. Every morning we were there we got up and out, spending hours wandering the streets of Bergen. We took a fjord tour, explored the Floibanen Funicular for spectacular views of the city and access to a whimsical troll forest. This was the first trip to Scandinavia for both of us. It was special to see and do new things in a new place together.
If your speed is more beach and relax, that’s cool. The important thing is finding your thing to do together.
